Real People – Trauma

CONFIDENCE AFTER TRAUMA

42 year old Jill, diagnosed with PTSD, had a background of childhood abuse and stomach issues. Presented with waking anxiety in the mornings and GI complaints related to remembering early abuse. I started Natural Processing (Somatic EMDR) with her. Over a few months her anxiety was greatly reduced where she was not waking up with the same panic in the morning. Her stomach issues had improved where she was no longer having as many issues with food and gastroparesis. She was feeling more calm and able to talk about the abuse with her family, which she had never disclosed. She is now looking to be an advocate for others.

What is Natural Processing/Somatic EMDR Therapy?

Natural Processing (NP) is a type of psychotherapy that uses a body-oriented approach to help people heal and process life challenges. NP was developed by Craig Penner, LMFT, and combines several approaches, including EMDR, somatic experiencing and polyvagal theory. It is based on the idea that the body needs to learn that danger has passed in order to truly change.  Trauma and early life experiences are embedded in our nervous system and bodies, as well as in our thought and limiting beliefs. Natural Processing decreases the trauma that is remembered in the body where you “feel” triggered. NP can be appropriate for trauma, anxiety, illness, phobias, panic attacks, autoimmune, PTSD and many other emotional problems. It can be particularly helpful for Lyme and autoimmune patients because it is an emotional detox that helps the body restore and repair.

How does Natural Processing differ from traditional EMDR therapy?

  • Somatic approach: NP utilizes a somatic approach to track resiliency and pace therapy more effectively. This allows therapists to notice and work with nervous system responses that are driven by parts of the brain that don’t use verbal language.
  • Focus on body sensations: NP focuses more on the body’s sensations than traditional EMDR therapy.
  • Real-time awareness: NP helps clients stay in the moment by being aware of their body sensations in real time. This allows for quicker detection of disassociation.

This approach works by:

  1. Identifying trauma or negative beliefs stored in the body and mind.
  2. Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) to reprocess distressing memories.
  3. Encouraging clients to connect with their body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Natural Processing/Somatic EMDR empowers clients to not only resolve past trauma but also feel more present and grounded in their daily lives.
